My Dog Training Journey
Firstly a bit about me
In all truth, I actually fell into dog training:
Back in September of 2009 I returned from a holiday having met a fabulous pair of boxers that lived just by where I was staying. I popped by on a daily basis to say hello to them and they made me feel so happy. I’d always had an eye for the breed, so randomly decided that I was going to get my own. I had decided that I wanted a bitch and she was to be flashy red. Immature, naive and excited I arrived at a ‘breeders’ a few weeks later to see a flashy red that they had left.
She was the only one, the last puppy. She was brought into the house to come and see me from a small garden shed where the puppies had been kept. She fell into my arms and the deal was sealed. With a cut on her head from fighting with their dogs, no tail and a stench that was one I would rather forget I brought her home and the fun began. Roxxi learnt things quickly and settled straight in at home. She loved her walks and all was going well, until not only did she hit some horrible skin issues but she also had absolutely no recall, no manners on the lead and was a disaster to walk. I decided this was the time to go training…
Moving in the right direction
We got kicked out of not only one but two training schools!! I finally rebuilt the courage and needing help more than ever tried the third, where she was still well known as the crazy dog. She would slip her lead and disrupt everyone weekly but they had tools to help me. They pushed me in the right direction with her training and Roxxi and I made the turn around that we had needed. I was then offered a place at that training school to become a trainer with them, little did they know I was expecting my first child.
Having learnt so much through the training school, attending many hours of lessons and masterclasses, then progressing my skills to understand how dogs learn on the trainer side of life I took a break to have my first child. Our training had to change a lot as did our routine. I had to think up ways to manage a young boxer and a baby, but we made it work so well that people would compliment her behaviour alongside the pushchair.
A lady in the pet shop we visited weekly then got a puppy and asked for some pointers to help with her pup, as she always enjoyed Roxxi’s visits. Then her friend got a puppy and asked the same, then the training story began.
