Lets face it – every dog loves to sniff!
- Dogs love to use their noses as it is their strongest sense.
- Dogs have over 300 million scent receptors in their noses and are able to stereo breathe (breathe in and out at the same time) as an example of how wonderful the dogs nose is, consider this:
- Imagine a beach, 1500 foot long, 150 foot wide and 40 inches deep
- On this beach, a dog can find two grains of sand that smell differently.
Isn’t that amazing! Now you can understand why when they go for a walk their noses can be glued to the ground, or you can be stuck at a lamp post whilst they sniff up all the information that has been left by the many dogs that have passed by before hand.
The way I see it is that dogs have this truly amazing talent, so rather than allow them to do it themselves, whilst you’re hanging around at the end of the lead, lets transform it into a game!
Scentwork is a super sport that entails finding different scents in different locations, both outdoors and indoors, similarly to how you would see the drugs dogs working at the airport.
How it works
- We first pair the scent(s) so the dog knows what to look for, then we work in numerous different ways to get them to show us where they have found it!
- We cover off boxes, bags, pipes, tubes, walls, perimeters, rooms, chairs, tables, waiting room set ups, vehicles, random outdoor items, garden searches and many more.
- This is a great sport for not only getting the dogs noses working hard, but for the dog and handler to create a team bond, as well as allowing the dog to work individually when required. 20 minutes of searching will mentally exhaust your dog for around the same as a 2 hour run!
Scent Work is suitable for all dogs, sizes, ages and breeds, it is also very well suited to dogs that have limb issues that cannot run around for long periods of time, as well as dogs that need their mind stimulating.
